The History Channel’s American Pickers might be headed north to Green Mountain State later this summer and they’re looking for leads – interesting characters with unique items and lots of ‘em. We know the Center of the Kingdom has plenty of those, so let’s let ‘em know! They are especially looking for folks with multiple buildings crammed with lots of cool stuff so the hosts have to really work for what they find, digging through piles and coming up with treasure. The American Pickers will pay for rare items including movie, music, and sports memorabilia, items from Vermont history, and basically any other oddball, one-of-a-kind, or interesting historical items you can think of. Please note that they are looking for collections, not folks with just a few items, and they don’t go to shops, antiques malls, auctions, or flea markets. The American Pickers currently are NOT looking for: farming/agriculture items, tools, glassware, appliances, tractors, crocks, stoves, or country primitives.

Featured Member: Ledgenear Farm

Sugarmaking season is finally over, and the rewards are sweet. James Coe and Nella Cargioli Coe of Ledgenear Farm in West Glover started sugaring their 550 taps in 2011, and 2013 was their best year yet. The farm is on James’ family’s land and he has sugared the same bush since he was a kid, but this time around the Coes are using pipeline and vacuum instead of buckets and a tractor and an efficient 30”x10’wood fired arch without RO. ”It made for a lot of boiling and socializing this year,” says Nella. The Coe family’s small sugarbush produced 200 gallons this season – a great year for many local sugarers – with plenty of dark syrup and a little fancy.

Ledgenear Farm packs their certified organic syrup in glass and sells it mostly on-line and at farmer markets in Boston and NYC. The rest of the family helps, and son Jude (7) is particularly becoming a young sugar maker, with 30 of his own taps and plans for expansion. The Coes find that sugaring is a good way to spend time with family and enjoy the bad weather in mud season, and cutting, splitting, and hauling all that wood for the arch is good recreation the rest of the year. “We could live a season without sugarin’, but the living wouldn’t be as good!”

Free Business Classes at Lake Region in May

Due to popular demand, the Barton Area Chamber will be offering two free business classes to the community. The two classes will be held from 5:30 to 7pm on Wednesday May 15th and 22nd in the computer lab at Lake Region Union High School in Orleans, VT. Free Pizza dinner will be provided at the half way point. You do not need to be a member to attend,although we do ask you to RSVP so we can order enough food.

The first class will cover the many benefits of membership and how your business can get the most out of the Chamber. We will discuss how we can help promote, locate, and sell your products and services. Our comprehensive marketing efforts, including website assets and print materials, will help you reach your intended audience. As partners, we can assist your business in customer growth and retention.

The second class will cover free internet resources that you can deploy to market yourself more powerfully and run your business more efficiently. We will review how Social Networking is an effective extension of Word-of-Mouth advertising. We will delve into Google’s free offerings that help you manage media and analyze data. Finally, we will look into free alternatives to expensive software that will liberate your business.

March Featured Member: Cold Spring Kitchen

The Barton Area Chamber welcomes Cold Spring Kitchen into the fold. Martha and Dallas Willey of Glover purchased the former Wooden Spoon Deli at Currier’s Market this fall and hit the ground running. The Willeys moved to their home on Cold Spring Lane in Glover after their house in Lyndonville was flooded by Hurricane Irene. A bartender at Parker Pie, Martha was making desserts for the restaurant when the Willeys learned about the business opportunity at Currier’s. The timing was right, and the Kitchen was born. The new menu features many of the same items as the Wooden Spoon minus the fried foods and pizza, and there are several new offerings as well. Cold Spring Kitchen has attracted a loyal following for their fresh, home-made baked goods and bread as well as their regular breakfast and lunch options and specials made with locally-sourced, fresh ingredients. ”Now, that’s a sandwich!” enthuses one regular customer. Cold Spring Kitchen is open Mondays and Wednesday-Saturday from 6am-2pm, Sundays from 9am-1pm, and is closed on Tuesdays.

A Wonderful I Love Winter Festival!

The Barton Area celebrated the season in fine fashion at the first annual Center of the Kingdom I Love Winter Festival on Saturday, February 23. The day included sleigh rides, sled rides, big and little fish, heritage crafts, good music, great food, and lots of smiles and fun in the snow. The adult winner of the Ice Fishing Derby was Andrew Petty with a 5.29 lb, 24 inch lake trout, and the Runner-Up was Daniel Darling with a 4.88 lb., 25 inch lake trout. Under 15 Winner Devin Royer brought in a 1.03 lb., 13.25″ yellow perch. The Barton Area Chamber would like to send out a big Thank You to all of our event participants and organizers, and to our sponsors: North Country Federal Credit Union, Barton Chronicle, E.M. The town of Westmore and the Barton Area Chamber of Commerce welcome the Willoughby Lake Store to the Center of the Kingdom! Owners Sandy and Jim Towns spent the last 25 years running Carmen’s Travel and living in Lyndonville, VT. Ready for a change, they started looking into purchasing a new small business in places as far away as Arizona and New Mexico. So why did they finally settle on restoring the old general store in Westmore, right in their own backyard? “Well, the price came down. And it felt right. The community needed a store,” says Jim. The community welcomed them with open arms. “The people have been unbelievable,” Sandy says. “We take care of them, and they take care of us.”

The Willoughby Lake Store sells groceries, gas, bait, sporting and ice fishing equipment, high-quality local handcrafted gifts, beer and wine and features a deli with pizza, sandwiches and hot soup. They hope to offer the Lottery within the next few months. Customers enjoy access to WiFi and an ATM. On Saturday, February 23 the Willoughby Lake Store will offer an ice fisherman’s breakfast special: a slice of breakfast pizza and a small coffee for $2.99 plus tax.

The Perry Farm

The Barton Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes the Perry Farm into its ranks. The 137 acre farm on Dutton Brook Lane in Brownington has been in Neal Perry’s family since 1924. Like his father and grandfather, Neal runs a diversified livestock farm that produces free-range chicken, eggs, beef, lamb, and maple syrup for sale. Visitors can book hayrides in the summer and sleigh rides in the winter, and take in the stunning views of the Willoughby Gap and Burke Mountain. The farm also houses a widely recognized horse boarding and training program based on the principles of Natural Horsemanship.

Neal and his fiancé Rebekah Bailey manage the Perry Farm with help from a pair of Brabant draft horses, Lynn and Clyde, and several Morgan horses. Neal breeds Morgans and offers his registered stallion Chadwick’s Benjamin at stud. The Perry Farm employs animal power for many of its needs, and that doesn’t just apply to horses. “I have a fondness for sheep,”says Neal. “They make it so we can park the weed whacker and the brush hog. The meat is really just a perk!“

Neal and Bekah enjoy inviting people to their farm to help them connect with their animals and with the source of their food. “We want to develop a community of people who utilize the farm for their food production, as well as offer some recreational opportunities,” Neal says. “We want to have relationship with our clients, and we want them to have a relationship with the farm and their food.” The Perry Farm hosted the Draft Animal Power Network Gathering and Annual Meeting this past September and plans on hosting more public events this year, including an Open Barn on Saturday, December 1 from 1-4pm.
